Food For Life

Contract Catering Services achieves a Food for Life Served Here Silver Award from the Soil Association for serving healthy and sustainable meals at 57 Primary and Nursery Schools in The London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

With studies showing that almost four million children are too poor to have a healthy diet it is increasingly vital that children are eating healthy meals in school. The Food for Life Served Here Award from the Soil Association recognises caterers who are serving meals that go beyond meeting the School Food Standards and ensure that children are being served meals that are not only delicious but also good for health, nature and our climate.

Contract Catering Services provides on average 16,500 meals a day and our nutritious menus meet the needs of a very diverse community.  The Silver Award recognises that at least 5% of ingredients are organic and we use sustainable, ethical and local ingredients from reputable suppliers.

Parents can be reassured that meals served to pupils in Food for Life Served Here certified schools are prepared from fresh ingredients meeting high standards which have been inspected and awarded by Food for Life.  Over 87% of our meals are freshly prepared and popular homemade dishes include our tasty Vegetable Moussaka, Lentil and Mushroom bake, Chicken Pie and Cauliflower, Spinach and Chickpea Curry.

Jenny Pittam, Head of Contract Services says “We are delighted to have achieved the Silver Award again as we recognise the importance of knowing the quality and provenance of the food that pupils are eating. The award also recognises our commitment to ensuring pupils are provided with fresh healthy choices every day and this provides them with the fuel they need to help them learn and develop.”

Ruth Galpine - Associate Director, Healthy & Sustainable Diets at the Soil Association, says “We are delighted to have been able to renew the Food for Life Served Here silver award for Contract Services in Tower Hamlets. This is a testament to the hardworking team going the extra mile to ensure they are keeping up their high standards in providing meals that are cooked from scratch using high quality ingredients.  In the current economic and social climate it is even more important to ensure children are fed well in school and Contract Services are demonstrating their commitment to keeping standards high”.
